Description: Psidium guajavaTropical Pear Well known for its abundant fruit production. Bright green leaves are accented by white, fragrant blooms most of the year. The bark is an attractive reddish brown and peels off revealing smooth gray bark beneath. Pear-shaped fruit with a green-yellow skin follow the blossoms and when cut open the fruit it is so sweet that it is used in the making of jams. An easy to grow plant that is suitable as a tropical, flowering bonsai and container growing. Fun Facts: 1. The tree was naturalized in Florida as early as 1765 and the first commercial plantings weren't until 19122. Native to Tropical America and was introduced early to Guam by the Spanish3. It then spread to the Philippines and beyond to Asia4. Flowers and fruits all year5. Can tolerate temperatures to 20 degrees F6. The guava is an excellent source of vitamins C and A.7. Makes an excellent plant for collectors of plants for the home or greenhouse environment8. Grown for the beautiful leaf shape and color9. Guava may have been domesticated in Peru several thousand years ago10. Peruvian archaeological sites have revealed guava seeds found stored with beans, corn, squash, and other cultivated plants11.
