He came to America in 1724 with his wife and their infant son Christopher (born 1721). In the spring of 1725 the family removed to Ephrata, Pa., where they remained about six years. In 1731 they returned to Germantown and settled there permanently. Christopher Sower, the elder, died in 1758. He was a pharmacist by trade, but is best known for his publishing activities. In 1738 he received a printing outfit from Germany and began at once to print in German for his fellow countrymen in America. Altogether he published over two hundred works in German and English, most of them of a religious nature. His son Christopher became the well-known Bishop of the Church of the Brethren, in Germantown. The name of the first ChristopherSower, printer and publisher, is still retained by the Christopher Sower Publishing Company, of Philadelphia. It was not until after Sauer Sr’s death that the Sauer family’s stronghold over German media was broken. Still, under Johann Christoph Sauer Jr. (1721-1784) the family printing business continued to flourish. Known as one of the wealthiest men in Pennsylvania, Sauer Jr. was a major benefactor and board president of the Germantown Academy, founded in 1760. As a bishop of the German Baptists, he continued his father’s special interest in radical Pietist texts as well as his advocacy of peaceful relations with the Indians. So prominent was Sauer Jr.’s pacifism that he became a target for Revolutionary patriots during the war for American independence. Sauer Jr. did not hide his disapproval of the revolutionaries’ choice of war to redress their grievances. Sauer Jr., however, suffered a dramatic setback for printing his objections to the revolution. Acting on a proclamation of treason by the Pennsylvania Supreme Executive Council in 1778, the Continental Army arrested Sauer, seized his press, ejected him from his Germantown home, and confiscated all other properties in his estate. Upon his arrest, he was stripped of his clothes and coated in paint as humiliation. The contents of the print shop were sold off for a fraction of their value to other printers, including Henry Miller, who had sided with the revolutionaries. Having lost his home and fortune, Sauer Jr. was reduced to dependence on in-laws for lodging for several years and, without a press, had to make a living as a bookbinder until he died six years later.
