With a presentation inscription to the recto of front endpaper, 'Elizabeth Edmonds, my Fathers Gift 1793 and now presented to my Granddaughter Eliz Edmonds June 1855'. An engraved portrait frontispiece of Thomson, with four engraved plates for each of the seasons and numerous handsome head and tail pieces with tissue guards. The first edition of Thomson's 'The Seasons' with Stockdale's notes. 'The Seasons' was an incredibly influential poem which inspired Haydn's oratorio and works by the likes of William Kent, Richard Wilson, Thomas Gainsborough, Richard Westall and J M W Turner. Thomson is also known for penning the lyrics for 'Rule Britannia' and 'The Castle of Indolence''. CONDITION In a full tree calf binding. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear, just some minor rubbing to the extremities and to the joints. Circular mark to the rear board. Gift inscription to the recto of front endpaper, dated 1793 and 1855. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with just the odd spot.
