Heads and tails of spines are slightly scuffed. Some general soiling to front and rear boards to both volumes. Hand-writing to the spines of both volumes. Both front pastedown’s and end-pages have torn paper residue from ex-library stickers. Binder’s ticket on both front pastedown’s: National Library Bindery Co. Moderate toning throughout both volumes. Foxing around plates. Some instances of water dampness staining. Some instances of finger soiling. Off-setting exhibited on all plates. No known marginalia or previous ownership. Binding tight and intact. A complete work. Please see photos. John Evelyn (1620-1706) was an English writer, landowner, gardener, courtier, and minor government official. He was a founding fellow of the Royal Society. Gardening was an increasing obsession for Evelyn, and he left a huge manuscript on the subject. He published several translations of French gardening books, and his Silva: A Discourse of Forest-Trees was highly influential in his plea to landowners to plant trees.
