Description: I have here for sale a book entitled THE UNITED STATES GRINNELL EXPEDITION IN SEARCH OF SIR JOHN FRANKLIN A Personal Narrative by Elisha Kent Kane. It is a new edition published in 1857 by Phillips, Sampson and Co, Boston, USA. There is a frontispiece portrait of Franklin, a fold-out chart showing the recent discoveries in the Arctic region, 8 full page plates and many other in-text b/w illustrations. There is a small description of the life of Sir John Franklin at the start of the book, 6 appendices at the end of the book and a fold-out chart of the discoveries of the second American Grinnell Expedition tucked into a pouch on the rear endpaper. Newly rebound in dark brown hardboards with the original spine cloth reattached. This has the gilt title lettering. Small tear to the base of this cloth, otherwise boards in fine/mint condition. New textured endpapers with private bookplate of Clinton Geiser to the front one. Text pages clean, some slight oxidization to the edges of the plates. xiii + 552 pages. 23 x 15 cm.
