Description: 1912 letter from mother and Royal Marines & mess bill payment for Cecil Edward Howard Morton, Captain, Royal Marines. Sadly he was to lose his life three years later on 15th May 1915 at Gallipoli. Captain Cecil Morton is believed to be the only British fatality from the campaign repatriated for burial after his family paid for his body to be brought back to Colchester in 1916. Capt Morton died on May 18, 1915, in a field hospital in Egypt, aged 29, after being injured while serving as adjutant of the Portsmouth Battalion, Royal Marines Light Infantry. His grave is at St Leonard’s Church in Lexden along with a plaque that commemorates both him and his son Cecil, whom he never met, and who was killed in WW2.
