After the Revolution he worked at the Leningrad State Opera House (the former St. Michael's) as a horn soloist. Around 1929 he also briefly played in Leonid Utyosov’s Tea-Jazz ensemble. Probably in late 1929 he definitively quit his job at the Opera House, exclusively dedicating his career to jazz. In 1931, Skomorovsky debuted with his own orchestra at the Europe Hotel in Leningrad (presently St.-Petersburg). In 1932-33 he recorded more than forty works at the Muztrest Studios. The orchestra was then called "The Concert Jazz Ensemble" – probably as opposed to Utyosov’s Tea-Jazz. Interestingly, the band’s activity was mainly confined to performances at major restaurants and hotels in St. Petersburg and Moscow; specific stage concerts programs were rather rare. During this time the band’s sound changed somewhat, but dramatic changes have particularly occurred after the arrival of Elijah Jacques; the arranger who wrote all the scores for the orchestra from the mid 30’s on. In the late 30’s the orchestra performed with Claudius Shulzhenko, a popular artist of the day. After the war the orchestra no longer made records, but the musicians increasingly went on playing separately. Unfortuately, the first postwar decade saw Leningrad’s cultural life decline dramatically, and even Skomorovsky’s fame and merit could not save the orchestra’s for its final dissolution.Efrem Borisovich Flax ( January 2 ( 15 ), 1909 , St. Petersburg - December 17, 1982 , Leningrad ) - Soviet singer , bass , Honored Artist of the RSFSR ( 1960 ). Graduated from the Leningrad Conservatory ( 1936 ).Efrem Flax was born in 1909 in St. Petersburg in the family of the photographer Boris Efremovich Flax. The family had nine children, Ephraim was the youngest. BE Flax owned two photo salons - at Voznesensky, 45, and Suvorovsky, 7-19, in St. Petersburg. The family lived at 61 Sadovaya Street [1] . At the age of 3 he lost his father. In 1917, the mother with her younger children moved to Atkarsk, Saratov province . In 1921 the family returned to Petrograd , however, due to the hardships of the then life, Ephraim and his younger sister ended up in an orphanage , where he stayed until 1926 [2] .Having started an independent life, he changed many jobs and professions. He worked in a mine in Donbass , then moved to Moscow , later returned to Leningrad , where he also did hard work - he was a stoker, excavator, cabman.According to the recollections of Ephraim Flax himself, he even came to take the entrance exam for the workers' faculty of the Leningrad Conservatory on his own cart with a horse. [3] Having failed in all subjects, except for the main one - vocals , he was admitted to the workers' faculty, and after 2 years - to the main course. E. Flax's teachers were professors I. S. Tomars, P. Z. Andreev , A. B. Merovich. In the first year of study, IO Dunaevsky was invited to the Leningrad Music Hall to perform several of his songs. He also performed with A. Tsfasman's jazz orchestra .In 1936, after graduating with honors from the conservatory, the young singer enters graduate school, and after graduation he remains to teach, soon becomes a soloist of the Leningrad Philharmonic , where he will work for 35 long years. With the beginning of the war, Flux enlisted as a volunteer in the people's militia , and later was sent to the front, in the Song and Dance Ensemble of the North-Western Front . He was buried at the Jewish (Preobrazhensky) cemetery - site 3/5 old, grave No. 265 [4] [5] .Reviews of creativity Headstone at the Preobrazhensky Jewish cemeteryEfrem Borisovich Flax is one of the most talented singers of our time. In his singing, the meticulous finishing of the details is captivating while maintaining a solid musical image. And tragedy, and lyrics, and humor, he always succeeds very well. Many Soviet composers are indebted to him for his attentive, sensitive and artistic approach to their work.- D. D. Shostakovich , 1940Flux is one of those performers who have the right balance between music and words. That is why both his voice and gesture represent a bright palette of timbre colors. His facial expressions are also organic and convincing. Before us is a truly creative artist. Flux sculpts with his voice, as of obedient clay, all the subtlest outlines of musical images.- S. Akimova, newspaper "Leningradskaya Pravda" from 03/21/1945 [6]There are voices that are inseparable from the best years of our lives. For me, such a voice will forever remain the velvet bass of Ephraim Flax. ... Athletic, with a beautifully set head, a burning brunette with a Mephistophelesian gaze.- V.
