19th century study after Raphael's "Triumph of Galatea" German school c. 1850

Description: This listing is for a masterful German study after Raphael's "Triumph of Galatea", executed in black and white chalk on medium brown paper. Though the artist is unknown, this confident drawing demonstrates superb draftsmanship in every detail. Can you spot these two iconic figures in Raphael's fresco for the Villa Farnesina? Completed in 1521, the work depicts the apotheosis of the sea nymph Galatea, who glides over the water on a shell chariot pulled by a pair of dolphins. Her ascension is marked by a host of putti, nymphs, and tritons gathered as a cresting wave, along with other sea creatures said to be inspired by Michelangelo. Drawing measures approximately 20-5/8"w x 16"h. It is in overall fair condition with scattered dirt and surface imperfections, including minor foxing on the figures. Note multiple creases throughout, which might be corrected with conservation. The sheet is tanned from prior matting, and there are several small tears and holes around the perimeter. See images to verify condition and feel free to ask questions. Terms of SalePlease allow (4) business days after the auction ends for processing and shipment.
