The collaborative final design features Liberty and Britannia, two allegorical themes that have been highlighted on many coins over the years, but never together. This special design appears as the obverse on a U.S. 24 Karat High Relief Gold Coin and a One Ounce Silver Proof Medal, paired with a unique reverse design created specifically for this collaboration by United States Mint Chief Engraver, Joe Menna. The reverse compliments the obverse and celebrates the relationship between the two nations. In the U.K., the joint design serves as the reverse, paired with the newly minted required image of King Charles III on the obverse. The Catalyst For This CollaborationBritannia has long been the national personification of Britain. Initially a symbol of maritime power, this allegorical image has come to be a symbol of national pride and unity. Britannia has been a staple on British coinage since the late 1600s. Allegorical Liberty, historically represented by a woman in her many variations, represents that bedrock value that is so important to Americans. She has appeared on U.S. coinage from the first coins minted by the United States Mint. What could be more fitting than a joint coin design that recognizes and unifies our two great nations. The United States and the United Kingdom have long shared a close relationship, based on shared values and ideals. In this project, the two mints - two of the largest national mints in the world - have come together in a ground-breaking creative partnership featuring the talent and skills of each Chief Engraver to produce a design unifying Liberty and Britannia. United Stated Mint Chief Engraver, Joseph Menna, and The Royal Mint Chief Engraver, Gordon Summers, have created a stunning design celebrating the harmony of the figures while giving each equal prominence in the design. In approaching this collaboration, the two Chief Engravers, who held a mutual respect and appreciation for the other's talents, began their task by discussing how each typically approaches developing a design. Though Gordon still likes to use traditional plaster modeling for figurative work, and Joe mostly uses digital modeling, the two master artisans discovered that their respective mints employ very similar design processes and must each consider similar legal requirements. Initial sketches consisting of rough thumbnail concepts were created, discussed, and refined together, filtering down to distilled concepts that were then finished into full sized design candidates. Both Chief Engravers described the opportunity to work together as the single most enjoyable aspect of the project. By the time the design candidates were completed and delivered, the two artists were no longer just colleagues, but good friends who both welcomed and valued the opportunity to work with a new team of reviewers and support staff, and to share and explore new common ground."
