Description: PLEASE NOTE THAT I PREFER NOT TO SHIP TO HAWAII, PUERTO RICO OR INTERNATIONALLY DUE TO THE RISK OF THE PLANT NOT SURVIVING THE JOURNEY. IF YOU WISH TO COVER THE COST OF EXPEDITED SHIPPING YOU CAN MESSAGE ME PRIOR TO BIDDING OR MAKING THE PURCHASE SO THAT WE CAN DISCUSS EXPEDITED SHIPPING OPTIONS BUT I CAN NOT BE HELD LIABLE FOR LOSSES DUE TO USPS OR OTHER SHIPPING CARRIER SERVICES THAT DO NOT DELIVER ON TIME RESULTING IN THE DEATH OF YOUR SEEDLING(S) I make every effort to ship plants as soon as payment is received. I do not provide hot packs so be mindful of cold temperatures in your area. This evergreen perennial tolerates mild temperatures when it is young preferably no lower than 60 F. For this reason you may need to be present when the post man delivers your package or have someone collect it from your mail box and bring it indoors to warmer temperatures before it gets damaged. I ship all of my plants via USPS FIRST CLASS 2 to 3 day delivery or FED EX with tracking that is available upon request but unfortunately, sometimes the postal service/carriers does not deliver on time and packages do sometimes get lost. Please understand, this is something that is out of my control. If your plant arrives damaged beyond saving, please message me immediately with pictures of both your package and plant still secured to the box it arrived in so that I may correct the problem as soon as possible. There is no need to leave negative feedback as I always try to answer questions or concerns on a very timely basis, sometimes within minutes of being messaged. Your satisfaction is my greatest concern and I will do everything possible to make things right. GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY GARDENING :) PLEASE PLANT YOUR AMLA SEEDLING AS SOON AS YOU RECEIVE IT. DO NOT REMOVE IT FROM THE BIODEGRADABLE CONTAINER OR YOU WILL RISK SHOCKING OR KILLING YOUR TENDER YOUNG PLANT. THE BIODEGRADABLE CONTAINER WILL BREAK DOWN OVER TIME AS THE ROOT SYSTEM OF YOUR PLANT DEVELOPS. ENSURE THAT THE SOIL/ROOT SYSTEM IS STILL MOIST/WET, PRIOR TO PLANTING. IF NOT PLEASE HYDRATE YOUR PLANT WITH DISTILLED, SPRING OR REVERSE OSMOSIS WATER. NEVER USE CHLORINATED WATER ON YOUNG PLANTS, THEY DON'T TOLERATE IT WELL. THE AMLA PLANT, WHICH IS ALSO KNOWN AS NELLI, EMBLIC, INDIAN GOOSEBERRY, IS A TART GOOSEBERRY LIKE FRUIT THAT IS VERY COMMONLY SEEN AND IS VERY POPULAR IN SOUTHEAST ASIA. THE TREE IS DECIDUOUS, HAS A GRAY-BROWN BARK THAT PEELS, FEATHERY FOLIAGE AND CAN GROW UP TO 60 FEET IN THE BEST OF CONDITIONS. THE LEAVES ARE VERY FERN LIKE AND VERY SIMILAR TO THOSE OF THE TAMARIND TREE. SMALL GREEN TO YELLOW FLOWERS EVENTUALLY PRODUCE FIRM, TART, CRISPY, JUICY GREENISH YELLOW BERRIES THAT CAN BE FROM 1 TO 2 INCHES IN GREATEST DIAMETER. FRUITS WILL TURN FROM GREEN TO GREEN/YELLOW OR GREEN/WHITE WHEN THEY ARE READY TO BE HARVESTED. TO CONFIRM THAT YOUR FRUIT IS READY TO BE PICKED A SINGLE BERRY CAN BE OPENED TO EXAMINE THE COLOR OF THE SEEDS. SEEDS TURN FROM WHITE TO BLACK WHEN THE FRUIT IS RIPE. FRUITS WILL TYPICALLY KEEP WELL ON THE TREE BUT TEND TO BREAK DOWN QUICKLY ONCE PICKED IF NOT REFRIGERATED. THE FRUIT IS EXTREMELY SOUR EVEN WHEN RIPE. USUALLY THEY ARE USED TO MAKE JAMS AND SYRUPS. THEY ARE ALSO HELD IN HIGH ESTEEM IN ASIAN CUISINE AND AYURVEDIC MEDICINE. AMLA IS REPUTED TO HAVE THE SECOND HIGHEST VITAMIN C (ASCORBIC ACID) CONCENTRATION WITH 600 TO 700 MG OF VITAMIN C IN ONE FRUIT. IT IS ONLY OUTRANKED BY BARBADOS CHERRY. AMLA IS AN EXTREMELY VERSATILE MEDICINAL TREE. ALL PARTS OF THE TREE INCLUDING THE ROOTS, BARK, LEAVES, BLOOMS/FLOWERS AS WELL AS THE FRUIT ARE USED TO MAKE A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT MEDICINAL APPLICATIONS INCLUDING JUICES, SYRUPS, INFUSIONS, LOTIONS, HERBAL TEAS AND OTHER NATURAL CONCOCTIONS. DRUG PREPARATIONS HAVE BEEN MADE TO TREAT DIARRHEA, TOOTHACHES, FEVER, SORES AND ANEMIA. ALTHOUGH THERE ARE KNOWN SPECIAL CULTIVARS IN ASIA, MOST TREES ARE TYPICALLY GROWN FROM SEED WHEN DIFFICULTY FINDING GRAFTING BUD-WOOD FROM KNOWN CULTIVARS SUCH AS CHAKAIYA KANCHAN, WILD HIMALAYAN AMLA OR BANARSI BECOMES A PROBLEM. SOIL: ALTHOUGH AMLA CAN BE GROWN IN CALCAREOUS SOIL, IT DOES BEST IN A DEEP LOAM THAT IS RICH IN ORGANIC MATTER AND WELL DRAINED SO THE PLANT WILL THRIVE. IF YOUR SOIL IS POOR IT SHOULD BE AMENDED BY DIGGING A DEEP HOLE AND MIXING RICH COMPOST IN WITH YOUR NATIVE SOIL. THE SOIL PH SHOULD BE SOMEWHERE BETWEEN SLIGHTLY ACIDIC AND SLIGHTLY ALKALINE. YOUR SOIL MUST NOT BE SOGGY/WATER LOGGED, CLAY RICH OR EXCESSIVELY SANDY. WATERING: WHEN AMLA IS A SEEDLING IT WILL REQUIRE REGULAR WATERING. THE VOLUME YOU APPLY WILL BE DEPENDENT ON HOW HOT AND OR DRY YOUR CONDITIONS MIGHT BE. IN GENERAL THE SOIL BENEATH YOUR PLANT SHOULD FEEL MOIST IF YOU DRILL YOUR MIDDLE FINGER DEEP INTO THE SOIL ABOUT 4 INCHES OUTSIDE OF YOUR PLANT. ALWAYS CHECK THE TOPSOIL OF YOUR PLANT FOR DRYNESS WHICH CAN GIVE YOU AN INDICATION OF THE NEED FOR WATERING. APPLYING A 2 TO 3 INCH LAYER OF GOOD ORGANIC MULCH AROUND YOUR PLANT IS VERY HELPFUL AND BENEFICIAL TO KEEP THE ROOTS OF YOUR PLANT MOIST. KEEP MULCH AWAY FROM THE TRUNK OF YOUR PLANT TO AVOID FUNGAL GROWTH WHICH MIGHT KILL YOUR YOUNG SEEDLING. MULCH SHOULD BE KEPT AT LEAST 4 INCHES AWAY FROM THE TRUNK OF YOUR TENDER YOUNG PLANT TO HELP TO PREVENT TRUNK ROT WHICH CAN KILL YOUR PLANT. AS YOUR PLANT BECOMES MORE MATURE AND THE ROOT SYSTEM EXPANDS YOU WILL NOT NEED TO WATER AS FREQUENTLY AND YOUR PLANT SHOULD MANAGE WITH WATERING NO MORE THAN ABOUT 1 TO 2 TIMES EVERY TWO WEEKS DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS UNLESS YOU LIVE IN A VERY HOT DRY CLIMATE WHICH MIGHT THEN REQUIRE MORE FREQUENT WATERING. SUNLIGHT: AMLA GROWS BEST WHERE SUNLIGHT IS ABUNDANT. AN AREA THAT IS RELATIVELY WELL PROTECTED FROM EXCESSIVE WIND IS A PLUS. THE LEAVES AND BRANCHES OF AMLA ARE SOMEWHAT DELICATE WHICH MAY RESULT IN DAMAGE IN HEAVY WINDS. A MINIMUM OF AT LEAST 4 TO 6 HRS OF FULL SUNLIGHT PROVIDES ADEQUATE LIGHT TO PROMOTE GROWTH. FERTILIZERS: YOUNG TREES CAN BE FED WITH ABOUT 5 OUNCES OF GRANULAR FRUIT TREE FERTILIZERS AT LEAST TWICE DURING THE FIRST YEAR. ANOTHER OPTION IS TO USE NATURAL FERTILIZERS SUCH AS AGED ORGANIC COW MANURE. A THIRD AND EXCELLENT OPTION IS THE USE OF LIQUID FISH EMULSION THAT IS TYPICALLY DILUTED WITH WATER THEN APPLIED TO YOUR SOIL SURROUNDING YOUR PLANT. LIQUID FISH EMULSION IS AN ORGANIC BYPRODUCT OF THE FISHING INDUSTRY. IT IS RICH IN NITROGEN, PHOSPHOROUS, AND POTASSIUM AS WELL AS TRACE ELEMENTS SUCH AS CALCIUM, MAGNESIUM AND SULFUR. WHEN APPLIED AS A SOIL DRENCH IN A DILUTED LIQUID FORM OR AS A FOLIAR SPRAY IN THE FORM OF FISH MEAL, IT PROVIDES READILY ABSORBED NUTRIENTS THAT ARE VERY GENTLE ON BOTH YOUNG AND MATURE PLANTS. WHEN APPLIED AS DIRECTED, FISH EMULSION WILL CREATE BENEFICIAL ORGANISMS AND NUTRIENTS THAT WILL PROMOTE EXCELLENT ROOT DEVELOPMENT AND HEALTHY GROWTH. CLIMATE: ALTHOUGH THESE ARE FAIRLY HARDY PLANTS THEY PREFER A MORE TROPICAL TO SUBTROPICAL WEATHER PATTERN. THEY ARE CAPABLE OF RESISTING MODERATE CHANGES IN TEMPERATURE PATTERNS BUT CAN STILL SUFFER IF EXTENDED PERIODS OF EITHER SEVERE COLD/FROST OR EXTREME HEAT BECOMES A PROBLEM. GROWING THEM IN NURSERY POTS IS A VIABLE SOLUTION FOR NORTHERN CLIMATES SO YOUR PLANT CAN BE BROUGHT INTO A WARM PATIO AREA WITH A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF AVAILABLE SUNLIGHT TO PROMOTE GROWTH UNTIL THE RETURN OF WARMER WEATHER. PRUNING: THE REMOVAL OF ANY DAMAGED, DISEASED, DEAD, OR ENTANGLED BRANCHES SHOULD BE DONE DURING THE SPRING TIME IN ORDER TO PROMOTE MORE GROWTH AND INCREASED FRUIT PRODUCTION. AMLA BENEFITS GREATLY FROM PRUNING. MOST OF THE COMMON OR UNWANTED PESTS CAN USUALLY BE REMOVED USING EITHER NEEM OIL OR ANY GOOD QUALITY HOME MADE OR ORGANIC SOAP SOLUTION.
