Description: This is an antique Reed & Barton Crumber Knife measuring 12-1/4" long and 2-1/2" wide at its widest. On the back of the handle, it is marked with the patent date ("Pat. Feb. 7, 1899") near the blade, "Reed & Barton 4" near the center, and "McKinley Hotel" at the end. The hotel was built in Canton Ohio in 1901 and the knife was found in Canton. 1901 was the final year of President William McKinley's presidency; he was assassinated in 1901 and his tomb is in Canton. William McKinley was the 25th President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1897, until his assassination on September 14, 1901, after leading the nation to victory in the Spanish-American War and raising protective tariffs to promote American industry. My opinion is that this Crumber Knife was part of the original cutlery purchased for the hotel. I assume it to be silverplate; there are no silver stamps on it which would normally be present if it was sterling silver. However, it is not magnetic. There are scratches, tarnish and small aberrations in the edge (see last photo). See high resolution photos for more and use the magnify feature.
