Description: Cabinet card photograph that shows four men wearing their butchers’ aprons. They stand in front of a butcher shop where slabs of meat are hanging in the window. The year 1880 is written on the back in period in pencil. The cabinet measures 6 1/2 inches by 4 1/4 inches. The cabinet has some flaws. It can bend easily when out of its plastic holder in the middle when handled as the mount was broken at the center on the back. The photo on the front has considerable creasing and is broken at some points along the crease. There are dark stains on the back from tape that had been on the back for some time. A piece is missing from one corner. There is some light soiling to the mount and light fading. The condition can be seen in the accompanying photographs. Printed on the back is, “The National Photographic View Co., No. 339 East 34th Street, New York., Duplicates can be obtained within fifteen days by ordering from the above number of negative.” In pencil on the upper back is written, “4, 2235-2” which is probably the address of the butcher's shop at 2235 2nd Ave. and also “1880” which is probably the year that the photo was taken (but, possibly the number of the negative). The penciled 1880 is in the position for the number of the negative. But, it is probable that the 1880 is the date that the photo was taken because of the position of this penciled notation after what appears to be the street address. In any event the nature & type of the cabinet card mount would seem to date the photo to the early 1880's. In the event that this 1880 is the negative # & to be absolutely safe in the dating of the photo we will say 1880's-1890's. The photographer's G.W. Heppner & Long were found listed in the March 1890 Trow's New York City Directory at the 339 East 34th Street address. The reference number for this item is #4715.
