It is a very attractive and extremely hot upright-growing chile! It packs quite a punch! This chile is our hottest pepper, even hotter than our Thai White Chile! This petite wild chile is native to the higher elevations of tropical and sub-tropical areas of Mexico and Central America, where it is known as ‘Chile Negro del Monte’, or ‘Black Mountain Chile’, or ‘Black Wild Chile’. It is also called ‘Chile Culebra’, which means ‘Snake Chile’, due to its super-hot ‘bite’. It gets its name from the fact that under certain growing conditions, it goes from green to black-splotched and finally to an orange-red when fully ripe, and is about 1cm long, or about ½ inch. It is at its hottest when at the ripe orange-red state! Avoid getting the juice on your skin and wear gloves when handling the ripe fruit! You don’t need very much of this chile pepper to make a delicious hot salsa or pico de gallo! It is well suited to growing in a pot or in the ground. Birds are particularly fond of this chile when it is ripe, so keep an eye out for birds as the peppers ripen, or draping a bird net over the plant is a good idea!
