A translation of the diary written by Hessian mercenary Captain Johann Ewald during his service in the American Revolutionary war. Written with humanity, sensitivity, and humour, Ewald's diary discloses many previously unknown facts. His opinions of the British generals and his discussions of their operations, tactics and mistakes are both revealing and entertaining. Illustrated with thirty original maps in black and white. Appended are Ewald's impassioned love letters to an American, Jeannette Van Horn. Ewald was a captain with the Field Jager Corps sent to America, and served in most of the major engagements of the British army from the New York campaign of 1776, the Philadelphia campaign of 1777, the fall of Charleston in 1780, and operations in Virginia that culminated in the siege of Yorktown, and his subsequent capture.
