Storm Warning When Dr. John Creux the Night Tripper floated into the rock scene, clad in robes and exuding voodoo vibes he seemed more exotic than most of his psychedelic fellow Americans. Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention were relatively conservative in comparison to the mysterious man in the huge hat that waved human skulls at the world. Yet there was more to the growling singer and funky pianist, who created a stir with his song Walk On Gilded Splinters, than a spooky image aimed at the hippie generation. John was a true son of New Orleans, the city that gave birth to jazz, blues and rock'n'roll. The good doctor had history and roots in a music biz that needed to be taken seriously. We are privileged to explore on this essential LP a plethora of his earliest and most satisfying recordings. The unique mixture of styles on display is drawn from the music he grew up listening to in the clubs of the Deep South, where he first practiced his (witch) craft. The combination would impress many other musicians, including the Rolling Stones and Jools Holland, himself no mean boogie pianist. The artist known as Dr. John launched with a theatrical flourish and a ground breaking album Gris-Gris in 1968. He was born Malcolm John Rebennack Jr. in New Orleans on November 20.1941. As a child he heard minstrel songs sung by his grandfather, and he also heard records by pioneer trumpeters Louis Armstrong and King Joe Oliver. He took up guitar and, inspired by Professor Longhair, became involved with the local R&B music scene as a session man. In 1957 he released a single Storm Warning under the name of Mac Rebennack that is included. An exciting blast of Bo Diddley style echoing guitar enlivened with raucous tenor sax, it must have stunned anyone catching it on their car radio while motoring down the freeway. "Hey Martha, getta load of this!" “Keep your eyes on the road George, or well end up in th’creek." By 1958 Rebennack was louring with Frankie Ford and Jerry Byrne for whom he co-wrote hit song Lights Out aged 17. Mac also made albums for the Rex label and A.F.O., a black musicians’ co-operative formed by Harold Battiste. One of the few white musicians playing R&B in New Orleans, it seemed like his career was in jeopardy in 1961 when he was shot in his left finger while breaking up a fight. Unable to play guitar, he switched to piano, moved to Los Angeles and played on sessions for Sonny Bono and Phil Spector. By 1964 he had begun to form his own bands, notably The Drits, Dray and Zu Zu, hence the title of our first item Zuzu Man released as a single in 1965. He now adopted his new identity as Dr John Creux The Night Tripper with a distinctive vocal style that might well have influenced a certain Mick Jagger. As one of the 'Wrecking Crew' of LA session musicians, he backed Sonny & Cher, Canned Heat and Frank Zappa. Meanwhile his interest in New Orleans voodoo was encouraged by an old friend Ronnie Barron, and his stage persona was based on a real life ‘Dr. John’ - a Senegalese prince and healer from Haiti. This worthy Prince had 15 wives, sported a collection of snakes and human skulls and sold protective voodoo amulets called gris-gris. Put together with costumes and effects, it all made a great ‘live’ stage show. It certainly entertained British audiences when Dr. John came to play at the Bath Festival and Lyceum Ballroom in London in 1969. Although critically acclaimed, it was difficult to break into the Top 40. But he had better luck with Right Place Wrong Time, a Number 9 hit in the Billboard chart in May 1973. While this song doesn’t figure here, we can happily sit back with a glass of rum, smoke, perform rituals and sing alonga Doc. Don’t get spooked by Zu Zu Man though, or you'll miss out on those fabulous drums on New Orleans, a deserved hit for Gary U.S. Bonds in 1960. Big Mac’s solo piano is strident and commanding on Danger Zone. A gleefully shambolic Tippatina is a bar room favorite alongside the sultry intimacy of Mama Roux. If you ever wondered what a boogaloo really sounds like then One Night Late is IT. And by the way, if your Earls On Strike get back to work and listen to the music of a remarkable musician and creative genius. ~ Chris Welch SHIPPING TO USA ONLY $4.79 (Media Mail) Buyer Pays Shipping 1st LP $4.79... each additional $1.50 LPs will only be combined with other LPs To qualify for the combined discount, all items must be purchased together, paid for with 1 payment, and shipped all together in 1 shipment.
