Description: David Roberts RA (24 October 1796 – 25 November 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of the Holy Land and Egypt that he produced during the 1840s from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838–1840). These, and his large oil paintings of similar subjects, made him a prominent Orientalist painter. This artwork depicts the side image of the Great Sphinx in Egypt. The Great Sphinx of Giza is a giant 4,500-year-old limestone statue situated near the Great Pyramid in Giza, Egypt. Measuring 240 feet (73 meters) long and 66 feet (20 meters) high, the Great Sphinx is one of the world’s largest monuments. It is also one of the most recognizable relics of the ancient Egyptians. Dimensions: 18.25ʺW × 0.75ʺD × 14.25ʺH Condition: Very GoodIf you like this piece of art, we also have another like it called the Fragment of the Great Colossus at Memnonium. Here is an excerpt from an article about his lithographs:"He visited many countries, including Egypt, Nubia, and The Holy Land, where he painted detailed and true representations of the buildings. As his popularity grew, there became a demand for either an original David Roberts painting or, as a new invention, a David Roberts lithograph.Lithography was invented in about 1796, the same year as the birth of David Roberts, and was becoming increasingly popular. It is a method of printing using stones onto which the picture to be copied is reproduced by hand. A David Roberts lithograph would have been drawn onto the stones by Louis Haghe, and he is very much an unsung hero in the art world of the time.Roberts and Haghe would work very closely together. Roberts would have already finished the painting which was going to be copied, and would be on hand to guide Haghe through the recreation of the work onto the stones. Often several stones would be used as different ones would be needed for different colors. Although Roberts was the original artist, Haghe had a huge input on the lithographs, and the work that went into a David Roberts lithograph, in particular, was substantial. His paintings and drawings were always very detailed, in some cases, almost photographic and to recreate them on stone was true quite a feat. These days, the value of all this work is realized, and you could be expected to pay up to $6,000 for a sought-after David Roberts lithograph and sometimes more for a rare print in good condition. Not only are these prints a very good and sound investment for holding, but they are also absolutely beautiful pieces of artwork. The detailing is stunning, and the colors magnificent. They are very elegant and also architecturally extremely interesting and are sound representations of the places that he visited. If $6,000 seems like a lot to pay for a copy of a painting, I think that the amount of talent, time and expertise should be considered. Not only are we looking at the work of one of the best artists of the day, but also at the work of one of the best lithographers of the day. The two men worked together closely, and Louis Haghe must never be forgotten when you look at a David Roberts lithograph" (Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/1469072)
