Arthur Bestor was a noted American intellectual who made major contributions to the fields of Educational Theory and Constitutional Law, in addition to Utopian and Communitarian studies. He taught at Yale, Stanford, Columbia, and Oxford before settling into three decades as Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Washington. His 1950 book Backwoods Utopias was a landmark publication in the field of Communal and Utopian studies and won him the prestigious Albert J. Beveridge Award of the American Historical Association. His later work on Educational Theory and the 'watering down' of American primary education was the source of much controversy and ongoing debate.
