Description: REFERENCE: “American Socket Bayonets and Scabbards” by Robert Reilly US Musket Conversion Bayonets Beginning late in the 1850s and continuing through the early months of the civil war, the vast majority of Model 1835/40 flintlock muskets were altered to percussion ignition. With the coming of the war, too, virtually all existing Model 1842 muskets were also pressed into service. Since many of these arms had been in storage for as long as two decades, it is reasonable to assume that bayonets for some of them had been lost or misplaced and that replacements were necessary. The influence of the Model 1855 blade is evident on these weapons, with their tapered shoulders replacing the original scalloped configuration. At least two variations of these bayonets exist, and are shown in B95 and B95A. They are extremely similar, with basically only their blade dimensions differing. That shown in B95 has a 17-3/4 x 29/32 inch blade with a 16-7/8 inch flace flute and a large "U.S." stamped near the shank. The other type, in B95A, has a 17-3/8 x 13/16 inch blade with a 15-15/16 inch fluteand again, the large "U.S." Other slight variations may exist. The preponderance of these bayonets are finished bright, but browned examples have been noted. The sockets on both are identical, each having a .846 inch bore; each being 2-5/8 inches long with a 1-1/16 inch muzzle length. As should be the case for bayonets for the Model 1835/40 and 1842 muskets, they are mortised for a bottom stud. A small eagle head is stamped in the locking ring of the former, and on the butt end of the latter, a small "I" appears. These bayonets are not common, very probably having been subjected to extensive field service during the early war years.
