Description: The Rocketeer is a superhero created by writer-illustrator Dave Stevens. The character first appeared in 1982 and is a homage to the Saturday matinee serial heroes of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. The Rocketeer is Cliff Secord, a stunt pilot who discovers a mysterious jetpack that allows him to fly. His adventures are set in 1938 Los Angeles and New York, and Stevens gives them a retro, nostalgic feel influenced by the King of the Rocket Men movie serial, the syndicated Commando Cody TV series (both from Republic Pictures), and pinup diva Bettie Page. In 1991 The Rocketeer was released as a feature film by Walt Disney Pictures and was directed by Joe Johnston. Rocketeer creator Dave Stevens has a small cameo in the film as the German test pilot who dies when the Nazi version of a rocket backpack explodes during take-off, this a part of stolen, then smuggled black-and-white film footage of Nazi top secret rocket backpack testing. Based on a Dave Stevens’ sketch, the art for the iconic retro movie poster was painted by the talented John Mattos known for his skill in capturing a sense of Art Deco/Art Moderne style. There were two additional versions done by Mattos, but never released because the Disney Studio feared that the audience might become confused that the film was an animated adventure. “I did three pieces of art for this project, the art director said ‘Relax and keep it simple; they’ll never use any of this anyway,’” Mattos said. Later versions, including foreign posters, featured photos of the actors prominently displayed since some at the studio felt that the artistic poster did not attract the desired audience for the film. Disney is reviving a cult classic favorite, The Rocketeer, with a new Disney+ movie titled The Return of the Rocketeer. David and Jessica Oyelowo are producing under their Yoruba Saxon banner. The project, written by Ed Ricourt, will also be a possible starring project for the Selma actor. The original movie, released in 1991, was directed by Joe Johnston and adapted from Dave Stevens’ graphic novel. In that film, which made close to $47 million at the domestic box office and became a fan fave for the studio, a young pilot stumbles onto a prototype jetpack that allows him to become a high-flying masked hero. The Return of the Rocketeer will have an all-new creative directive, with Ricourt’s story focusing on a retired Tuskegee airman who takes up the Rocketeer mantle. This is the first film under Yoruba Saxon’s first-look deal with Disney, which we first told you about. The Return of the Rocketeer is being developed by the Disney live-action team.
