Smooth, spacious sound and a great value Sennheiser has long-proved that great-sounding headphones don't have to cost an arm and a leg. These HD 560S open-back 'phones deliver accurate, well-balanced sound at a price that's more accessible than some high-end headphone choices. I've tried them and love them — some of the best imaging and separation I've heard, regardless of price. A sound legacy with a new twist The sound signature is inspired by the premium HD 660 S headphones, but these 'phones bring their own distinct sonic characteristics to the table. Sennheiser developed a brand-new dynamic driver for the HD 560S. They're tuned for clear, detailed sound that's smooth and natural across a wide frequency range. But where the HD 660 S delivers a more immediate soundstage, these headphones offer a larger, more spacious presentation. Lightweight design with a snug, nicely padded fit At just over eight ounces, these headphones are also smaller and lighter than some of the heavyweights you'll find in this audiophile class. They sport a snug, secure fit to keep the drivers properly aligned with your ears. But the headband and earcups have extra cushioning, including ear pads made of soft, velvety cloth. Performs best when properly powered I drove these headphones with a stack of iFi ZEN gear — my go-to DAC/amp combo. Like with all high-performance headphones, the HD 560S will sound their best when connected to a separate headphone amp. If you're worried about an amp adding cost to your headphone setup, there are some nice bargains out there. And these headphones have two connection options: the detachable cable features a 1/4" headphone plug, and there's also a 3.5mm miniplug adapter included. I tested them with the compact, yet substantial iFi ZEN DAC and ZEN CAN combo that I use in my home setup. That stack of headphone amp/DAC powers the the HD 660 S 'phones nicely. It is just a natural fit. The versatile AudioQuest DragonFly plug-in USB DAC/amps offer some nice portable options.
