George, founded the Canonsburg China Company in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. Later renamed the Canonsburg Pottery Company in 1909, the business is best known for its dinnerware with decal designs. Early dinnerware items had hand-painted designs, many with floral motifs and gold or colored lining. Efforts toward automation later replaced these designs with decals. Production was improved via metal molds, tunnel kilns, and jiggering and stamping machines. In 1960, Canonsburg Pottery developed a new decal underglaze technique that reduced the number of firings a piece required. Canonsburg Pottery purchased the equipment and molds from Steubenville Pottery Company in 1959. It produced its popular "Adam Antique" and "Rose Point" patterns under the Steubenville brand. Additionally, Canonsburg sold its "Partio" line under the Steubenville name.Chain stores, department stores, and mail-order firms sold Canonsburg products until the 1970s, when foreign pottery imports flooded most of the market. As a result, the company suffered from higher operating costs, increased regulations, a reduced workforce, and dropping sales during this time. Though Canonsburg Pottery had remained in family hands through four generations, businessman Angelo Falconi bought the company in 1975. Canonsburg Pottery officially ceased operations in 1978.
