Description: THE BEATLES - Yesterday.. And Today: "Second State - Butcher Cover" From 1966 THE BEATLES - Yesterday.. And Today: "Second State - Butcher Cover" From 1966 Description Offered is one of the most popular of Beatles Albums - the hard to find release of Yesterday ... And Today with a "Second State" Butcher Cover. The saga of one of the greatest polemics in the History Of Recorded Music - the "scandalous" Butcher Cover Art originally produced for this,The Beatles 9th studio album - apparently began when record store retailers saw it. The Beatles and the record manufacturer (Capitol Records) had thought it looked fine to them. Record stores prevailed, Capitol changed the cover, and the Butcher Cover has become a legend. Here is some information that highlights the rare, "controversial" Cover: Underneath the regular cover in the pictures shown is the so-called ''butcher'' cover of this release which induced such an outrage that the album was recalled and new artwork was created from an earlier Beatles photoshoot. A small number of copies escaped and appeared on the market nonetheless. These are known as ''first state'' butcher covers. Not wanting to lose time with waiting until the new covers were ready, Capitol decided to first use the new front slicks and glue them over the original artwork, to hide its offensive picture from the public eye. The (not too many) copies of this that came unto the market are known as ''second state'' butcher covers. These are discernible by checking the cover in the middle on the right hand side. If the ''butcher'' artwork is underneath, a dark triangle (of Ringo's turtleneck in the covered butcher version) shows through (see our Photo Gallery). If the pasted slick is removed and the original artwork thus restored the release is known as a ''third state'' butcher cover. All three states are known in stereo too. We have included many Photos in our Gallery (these are of the actual Album). Below you will find a general condition description of both the Cover and the LP. Here are some of the identification markers of the Second State Cover that are present on our offered release: 1) The single most important marker (as described above for the Second State) is the shaded triangle of Ringo's Turtleneck. We have included a number of photos of this. 2) The size of the cover. These 2nd and 3rd State covers will be about 1/8” taller than First State covers or the later normal Trunk covers as they have been trimmed to address alignment issues at the right side prior to being shrink wrapped. 3) Another way to identify a 2nd state MONO butcher is to look closely at the bottom of the glued on "Trunk" picture. If the trunk doesn't go all the way down to the border / limit of the picture and if there is some white "space" in between the trunk and the limit of the picture, then chances are very good, that it is indeed a 2nd state MONO butcher. This however is not true for stereo pressings. 4) The Deadwax Matrixes on the LP, with the Los Angeles Pressing Plant Logo. These are listed below. Also, on the Back Cover - lower right corner - just to the left of the "RIAA" Stamp - the number 6 confirms the LA Pressing Plant.
